How to set up Branching Questions

Feature: Assessment Form Builder
For: Superusers, Recruiters

I want to:

  • Understand what Branching Questions are
  • Create a form using branching logic
  • Set up branching between questions
  • Test and review my form

Why and when to use branching

Branching Questions allow you to create dynamic assessment forms that adapt based on a candidate’s answers. This keeps forms shorter, clearer and more relevant - helping reduce candidate drop-off and improving user experience.

Branching is ideal when:

  • You want to hide irrelevant questions based on earlier responses.
  • Certain follow-up questions are only needed for specific answers.
  • You want to make the candidate experience more streamlined and personalised.

Key rules for branching setup

Rule

Description

Form Type

Branching is supported in Candidate Assessment Forms.

It is not available in Pre-Assessment Forms.

Start Point

Branching can only begin from a Choice question.

Single-Answer Only

You cannot branch from a Choice question that allows multiple answers. If “multiple answers” is enabled, branching is unavailable because the system cannot determine a single branching path.

Target Question

Each branch must lead to a question that appears later in the form.

Mandatory Fields

Branching automatically overrides mandatory settings - hidden questions will not prevent submission.

Multiple Choice Logic

Apply branching from multiple ‘Choice’ questions within the same form, provided they are single-answer questions.

Setup Order

You can add questions after enabling Enable Branching, but you cannot add or edit questions while View Branching is switched on.

Randomise Questions

“Randomise Questions” option cannot be used with branching. Enabling randomisation will automatically disable Enable Branching.

How to enable branching logic

Video: How to enable branching logic

  1. Go to Settings > Assessment Forms.
  2. Open an existing Candidate Assessment Form or create a new one.
  3. Add all required questions for your form.
  4. Switch on Enable Branching (top of the form).
    • This determines whether the form will use branching logic.
  5. Toggle View Branching to open the branching editor view.
  6. Open the Choice Question you want to branch from.
  7. For each answer option, choose what happens next using the Go to dropdown:
    • Next question – continues to the next question in the form.
    • Or select a specific question from the list to create a defined branch to a later question.
    • You can branch to any question that appears after the current one in the form.
  8. To add more questions later, turn View Branching off, add your new questions, then turn View Branching back on to update the paths.
  9. Save your changes once all branching logic is configured.

Please note: Preview option shows all questions and does not reflect live branching logic.

Tip: You can use branching on more than one Choice question, but each path must lead forward in the sequence - not backward or circularly.

Candidate experience

Candidates completing a Branching Form will see a simplified, mobile-friendly layout designed for clarity and ease of use.

Feature

Description

Dynamic Question Numbering

Question numbers automatically update based on visible questions, ensuring a clear and sequential flow even when some questions are skipped.

One Question at a Time Layout

Non-timed Branching Forms now use the same layout as timed forms, displaying one question per screen for a smoother and more accessible experience.

Declaration Page Review

Before submitting, candidates can review all their answers on a single page. Each question includes an Edit button, allowing candidates to return and update their responses easily.

Scored questions and pass marks

You can include scored questions in forms that use branching, but it’s important to consider how this affects total scoring and pass mark calculations.

  • If branching hides certain questions, candidates will only see and answer the questions that apply to them.
  • The maximum possible score and total achieved score may vary between candidates, depending on their branching path.
  • When configuring pass marks or reviewing assessment results, keep in mind that not all scored questions will be presented to every candidate.

Tip: Pass marks are always based on the total score. Review your branching logic carefully to ensure the scoring and pass mark remain fair across all possible question paths.

See the Scored Assessment Form Setup Guide for full setup steps, scoring logic, and best practices.

FAQs

Can I use branching on Text or Rating questions?
Branching can only begin from Choice questions, but it is possible to branch to any question type.

Can I edit question order after enabling branching?
You can’t edit or reorder questions while View Branching is turned on.

To make changes, turn View Branching off → edit the questions → turn it back on to update your branching paths.

Can I add new questions after enabling branching?
Yes, you can add new questions after Enable Branching is switched on - but not while View Branching is active.

Always switch View Branching off first, add your questions, then switch it back on to update your paths.

What happens to mandatory questions that are hidden by branching?
Hidden questions are automatically excluded from validation, so candidates won’t be blocked from continuing or submitting their form.

Does branching work in Pre-Assessment Forms?
No - it’s available only in Candidate Assessment Forms.

Why can’t I enable both “Randomise Questions” and “Enable Branching”?
Branching and randomisation can’t be used together because question order must stay fixed for the logic to work.

If you turn on Randomise Questions, branching will automatically be disabled.

Can I test branching logic using Preview?
Not accurately. Preview Form shows all questions in sequence and does not simulate branching behaviour.

To check logic, complete the form as a candidate through the live workflow or a test job.

What’s the difference between “Enable Branching” and “View Branching”?

  • Enable Branching – activates branching for the form.
  • View Branching – switches the form into the branching editor view so you can define or adjust the question flow.
If you need to add or reorder questions, turn View Branching off first.

Why can’t I see the question I want to branch to?
You can only branch to questions that appear after the current one in the form.

If your target question comes earlier, you’ll need to reorder your form before enabling branching.

Can I use more than one branching question in a form?
Yes. Branching can be added to more than one question, as long as each branch leads to a question that appears later in the form.

Can I use scoring on questions within a branched assessment form?
Yes. Scoring works as normal on Choice, Rating, and other scorable question types. However, if branching hides a question, it won’t contribute to the candidate’s total score.

Will branching affect the total or pass mark calculation?
Potentially, yes. Because some questions may not appear to every candidate, total achievable scores can vary. The pass mark is still based on the overall total score configured for the form, and the pass mark percentage auto-calculates automatically.

Can I see which questions were skipped in the candidate’s score breakdown?
Yes. In the candidate’s assessment response view, skipped questions (hidden through branching) will display as unanswered and will not affect scoring totals.

Can I include images or videos in a branched assessment form?
Yes. You can add images and embedded videos to any question within a branched assessment form, just as you would in a standard assessment.

They will display only when that question appears as part of the candidate’s branching path.

Can I branch from a multiple-answer Choice question?
No. Branching only works on single-answer Choice questions.

Enabling multiple answers in the question settings will disable branching for that question, as the system cannot determine a single branching path when more than one answer can be selected.
